Ford 8.8" Differential Pinion Gear Removal
This photo comes from Chapter 4: Factory Limited-Slip Differentials.
Getting the pinion gears in and out of a differential can be a royal pain if they the side gear plates are tight. This photo illustrates using the differential pinion gear pin to walk them out while turning the side gear with a splined tool held captive in a bench vise. I've run into this problem myself rebuilding Ford 8.8" rear ends for various cars including the LX and the 347 and although ingenuity can get you through quite a few challenges, some simply can't be overcome without the proper tools — luckily, this isn't one of those, but as noted in the caption in the book for this photo, you do need to be careful or you can damage the differential case.
